This amazing oval seal intaglio ring, dates back to the early part of the 16th C and the reign of Henry VIII / Mary I (Bloody Mary).
The engraving certainly resembles Queen Mary and important people / figureheads of society were often engraved on these rings: this would warrant more research.
This Tudor ring is a thumb ring for a gentleman and is in superb condition.
I was told that it may be a Priest's ring and that the picture depicts an Abess, but having looked into this, I do not believe it to be the case.
Abesses dressed like nuns in very simple attire and this appears to be a society lady: well-dressed and adorned with jewels.
I do not dispute however, that the ring may have belonged to a Priest.
It is very large and the band measures an inch in diameter.
The oval seal measures 3/4" by 5/8".
This is a very rare, solid ring with lots of character and presence and in amazing condition for its age.
