A pre-war men's gold single button chronograph wristwatch in excellent condition. The case has hinged front & back covers, both close firmly & evenly. It has the 9 carat gold Dublin import hallmark for 1936 & the case makers mark SD. The back of the case is engraved 'PRESENTED BY A FEW FRIENDS IN COLEHILL DISPENSARY DISTRICT February 1938.' The dial has an outer telemeter scale (in kilometers) & an inner spiral tachometer scale (in miles per hour) as well as the usual hour, minute & 1/5th seconds scale & subsiduary seconds dial. The stopwatch function works independantly from the time keeping. The Swiss chronograph movement is unsigned it is running well & keeping good time. The stopwatch function works by pressing the button (firmly) on the edge at 2, once to start, again to stop & a third time to reset the centre hand to 12. The telemeter scale was used by the military as a range finder, when the artillery's (or navy's) gun flash is seen the stopwatch is started, then when the sound is heard, the stopwatch is stopped, the second hand will point to the distance. The tachymeter scale is to measure average speed in mph over 1 mile.
