This is a lovely example of a Victorian wine decanter, probably dating to between 1860 and 1880.
The decanter has a mallet shaped body, the slender neck being cut with seven panels, which extend downwards sweeping out onto the ‘shoulder’ to become petal shaped. From the centre of each ‘petal’ a vertical wedge cut extends downwards toward the base. This effectively forms seven panels over the body of the decanter, each of which is filled with a large oval shaped cut. The edge of the base is cut with a series of fourteen deep arch-shaped cuts. The base is star cut.
The stopper is hollow in the centre. The neck is cut with a series of five panels; the cutting around the circumference of the stopper matches that on the decanter, except that there are five panels. The apex is cut with five triangular facets.
Both the decanter and the stopper are etched with the number ‘104’.
Condition: Very Good. It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks. There are a few small scratches to the body of the decanter and there is a very faint ring of water marking in the base of the decanter. This is only visible on the closest of scrutiny.
