Magnificent and Unusual 18th Century Scottish Horn Snuff Mull
|
Dateline: Late 18th Century |
Item# 36443 |
The best example I have had in over thirty years, it is breathtaking there is no damage at all but this little beauty is just gorgeous and perfect in every respect.. I love the little bone heel with its three studs, and the charming shape of the foot, you can imagine a debonair18th Century gentleman of the day strutting around in all his finery wearing a boot just like this one.
It has the original cork stopper which is attached to the lid and this still forms a good tight seal. The colour is stunning as you can see and this is a fabulous piece. The only other example I can find is shown on 'plate 13' in Edward Pinto's 'Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking', a book that is a must if you collect or want to start a collection of snuff boxes, as is his other publication being 'Treen and other Wooden Bygones'.
It would have been made from the horn of either a ram or goat, the horn shaped by either heating it or boiling until soft and then shaped into the desired form, to have made this shape must have taken the skill of a very experience person.
It measures approx 11cm high 3.5cm wide the foot is 4cm long.
