The Volunteer Rifle Corps Staffordshire Jug with Relief Mould
|
| Dateline: Circa 1870s |
Item# 33661 |
A Staffordhire jug depicting two soldiers on either side of the jug each standing at ease, one in a green uniform and the other in a grey uniform and each leaning on a rifle. The jug is decorated with trees and bocage foliage and the detail is in moulded relief all on a textured grey/white ground. The handle is formed as a rifle. Further, there is an inscribed band "The Volunteer Rifle Corps" below the figures around the jug. The Volunteer Rifle Corp were in existence from 1859 to 1912 and were superceded by the modern Territorial Army. A good ceramic record of British history.
Condition: Very Good. A small rub of paint on a soldier's rifle with a tiny rough area on the bocage which is probably a firing fault.
 Dimensions: 6 inches high
