A very rare outstanding set of 4 George III Salt Cauldrons, c1818, by Solomon Royes & John East Dix. These Salts show an East India Company Influence in that the 3 legs of each salt is in the form of a Chinaman, the 'Chinoiserie' is a strong theme used at this time of the British Empires' influence in the Far East. Both Royes & Dix were apprenticed to that well known & great Siversmith, Solomon Hougham in1817, then the two of them went on together a year later, in 1818, so these pieces are a very early example of the partnership. Set of 4 Georgian heavy Salt Cauldrons. On raised Chinese men Feet. Each cellar is approx 10cm in diameter, across the top, and 5cm in height. The Feet pads are 2cm x 1.5cm. The Hallmarks are Lion for Sterling. Lion for London. Letter C in cartouche. For 1818. Makers mark S R I E D, Solomon Royes & John East Dix 1818-1819 flatware. The total weight of the set is 693.6grams. The interior of the salts were once gilded, remnants showing. They are decorated with beautiful flowers and each salt has an empty cartouche. The Chinese Man, was a big influence during the Georgian period.
Condition: Excellent. These Salts were possibly made for a retailer,likely to be Kensington Lewis, who had silversmiths designing pieces in the 16th to 18th century manner, borrowed from the Chinese."
The condition of these stunning Salt Cauldrons is Excellent, apart from a few small dings on the underside of the bases. The hallmarks are rubbed in a few places.
