Girl in the Swing Porcelain Seal St. James Factory

Dateline: Circa 1751 Item# 31852
The most adorable little porcelain jewel: a rare English porcelain seal from the Girl in a Swing factory, St James made C1751, modelled as a spotted dalmation dog, and inscribed above the gold mount "Je Suis Fidelle". The expression on his face is gentle and tender, fulfilling his pomise 'I am faithful'. The seal is complete with its cornelian matrix carved with a turtle dove and two entwined hearts. As near to porcelain "gems" as could be possible, these enchanting toys, (cabinet pieces for adults), such as patch boxes, seals and scent bottles, are now firmly attributed to the Huguenot Charles Gouyn who was an associate of Nicholas Sprimont at Chelsea to which these wares were once attributed. Initially thought to have been the product of the Chelsea factory but this attribution was always tentative, and the final proof of correct attribution was found in documents held at the Sevres factory, revealing that Charles Gouyn left Chelsea, "... with the loss of part of his funds and makes at his house in St James Street very beautiful small porcelain figures."
