A fine Daniels porcelain plate with an intricate gilded leaf border and painted with a scene from Sir Walter Scott's romanticised Kenilworth*, the tragic tale of the doomed love affair between the Earl of Leicester and Amy Robsart.
Scott's work recounts the doomed romance between 16thC Queen Elizabeth's favourite, the Earl of Leicester, and Amy Robsart, who enter into a secret marriage to avoid the wrath of the notoriously jealous Queen and rejecting her fiancé, Edmund Tressilian. Entrusted by the Queen into the jealous care of Varney, Leicester's Master of the Horse and whom the Earl has used as cover for his affair and marriage, she dies died from a fall plotted by Varney, who is arrested and executed. After a period of disgrace, Leicester regains his position at court.
