Highly Cut Lead Crystal Scent Bottle c.1830
|
Dateline: Circa 1830 |
Item# 35049 |
This is a beautiful, high quality lead crystal scent bottle, probably dating to around 1830.
The bottle has a polished, uncut disc shaped rim and a very short plain neck. The shoulder of the bottle is practically horizontal and about 1.5cm from the neck there is a deep, circular groove. Beyond this there is a band of very fine relief diamonds. The circumference of the shoulder is ‘squared off’ to form a sixteen-sided figure. The body of the bottle is relatively shallow compared to its diameter. The straight sides have again been cut with deep mitres, forming 32 thin ‘pillars’ around the circumference. These same deep mitred cuts continue inwards across the base to the centre.
The flattened round stopper has three deep, acutely angled mitred cuts, crossing at the centre to divide the circle into six segments. At the circumference the centre of each of these segments is cut vertically with a mitred cut. The effect of this is to convert the segments into heart shapes. Alternate hearts are cut very finely to form tiny relief diamonds. The three remaining hearts are polished flat. The neck of the stopper is fluted, with a slight waist half way down the cut section.
Condition: Very Good. There are a few minor chips to the pillars, although these are only visible on the closest of inspection. In addition, there are some faint linear marks to the side of one of the plain hearts on the stopper, which are not scratches but wheel marks resulting from the cutting wheel grazing it when the fine diamonds were being cut on its neighbour.
Dimensions: The scent bottle has a total height including the stopper of approximately 9.5cm.
