|
| Dateline: Circa 1880 |
Item# 31788 |
A rare and delightful water jug and tumbler set, the jug with a tall spout, loop handle and spherical body, the matching tumbler with a straight neck and lightly compressed spherical body. Both pieces have rigaree applied collars, and each is decorated with enamelled water lilies covered with coraline bead work - many hundreds of applied tiny clear glass beads - over a graduated opalescent tinted ground. The decoration is enhanced with gilded water ripples. Circa 1880, thought to be American, both bases enamelled in black with the word "Patent". For further reference see "British Glass 1800-1914", Charles R. Hajdamach, Antique Collectors Club 1991, page 450, illustration #23 from the Broadfield House Collections, the mark shown has the letters "W. L." in addition to "Patent".
Condition: Fair. Bruise to the neck of the jug, just below the applied handle (possibly from pressure or temperature difference when the handle was applied); bead losses; some light age and use wear; nothing further found; indented and polished pontils - if you have any questions about this item, contact me.
