WW1 gentlemens gold wristwatch
|
| Dateline: Dated 1915 |
Item# 31773 |
A first world war wristwatch of the type known as an 'Officer's trench watch', This was due to many being bought early in the war for personal use on military service. Prior to this men preferred to use a pocket watch, but during the war, it was found to be more convenient to use a wristwatch. The 9 carat rose gold case is 1,3/16" (31mm) diameter excluding the crown & lugs, it has no engravings or inscriptions. The front & rear covers are hinged in the style of a pocket watch & the rear cover has the London import hallmark for 1915. The 15 jewel lever movement is marked Swiss made, it runs well & keeps good time. The enamel dial has no chips or cracks & retains most of the original luminous paint infill (although no longer luminous after over 90 years). These WW1 wristwatches are usually silver cased, it is rare to find one in gold. A nice piece of WW1 history.
